If you're reading this blog post, then you're probably one of those who are fortunate enough to not have been affected by typhoon Yolanda. There are a lot of people in Central Visayas who are crying for help and are pleading fellow Filipinos, and even the whole world, to assist them in their time of need. We have seen it in the news, some areas as about 90% destroyed and there's no available food and water, except for the ration and relief provided by the government and other private organizations.
I'm sure that most of us have some extra, like clothes and shoes which we have not been wearing for some time now. T-shirts, jackets, blankets, towels, these are the basic necessities that the victims of typhoon Yolanda need, aside from food and water. Our fellowmen are cold, with no roof above their heads, exposed to the sun, wind, and water. It will take some time before these people would be able to rebuild their lives and in this time of need, THEY NEED US.
Here are some guidelines that you can use when sending your used clothes:
1. Pack wearable clothes, fit for the Philippine weather. Do not pack winter clothes because we do not have winter here in the Philippines. You can donate your old normal jackets, it would be useful specially for kids. Be sure that if you're donating used clothes, these clothes must be in good condition.
2. Do not pack unnecessary pieces of clothing: Your sexy dresses, gowns, and socks won't be appreciated. These victims will probably be housed in evacuation centers so they need DECENT clothes. For socks, they won't have any value unless you're packing it with shoes. And if you're giving shoes, don't pack stilettos or heeled shoes, it's even better to give slippers.
3. Underwear. New underwear. No explanation needed.
4. Pack blankets, towels, and face towels.
5. Be sure that you will be sending CLEAN CLOTHES. Avoid sending clothes which you have just bought from the ukay-ukay stall because these clothes are treated with chemicals and we might do more harm than good if the victims would wear these chemical-laden clothing. Remember, water is scarce in their area so we must give them ready-to-wear clothing the way we are sending ready-to-eat meals.
By the way, Air21 branches will be happy to receive your donations until November 30.
