What is the Best Acne Treatment?

Battling acne for 10 years is not easy. I've tried several over-the-counter medications, facials, treatments, and countless visits to the dermatologists and I've learned one good thing about it: there is no overnight cure for acne.

Below is a list of the common acne treatments that I have tried before....

Overnight Spot Treatment
I've joined the bandwagon a few years ago and applied spot treatments to my pimples in the hope that they would clear out when I wake up the next day. Most spot treatments contain high levels of benzoyl peroxide which is very good in killing acne bacteria. However, though we may eliminate bacteria with this kind of treatment, it's not very gentle on the skin. I have experienced having very dry skin while using overnight spot treatments, even the finger that I used to apply the treatment has become dry and patchy.

Topical Antibiotics
This kind of treatment needs a doctor's prescription. When I was in college, I remember using an antibiotic cream for my pimples. I'm glad that they worked and I continued using it for several months but my pimples did not really clear up. I continued buying the antibiotic cream even without going back to my doctor and little did I know that it is not good to use antibiotic creams for long periods of time because our body might get immuned to it. If we get immuned to the antibiotic, it would no longer work and using it would mean that we're only wasting our hard-earned money.

Derm Clinic Injections
When I have large pimples, I usually go to the dermatologist for injections. I find this treatment very effective in reducing the swelling of acne but I would almost always pray during every shot. Though effective, this procedure is extremely painful. Some people would even get acne injections from facial spas and not from certified dermatologists and this is very dangerous.

What is the best acne treatment in the whole wide world?

Acne does not have an overnight treatment, and acne does not develop overnight, either. Acne becomes visible when your skin's surface has already turned red and become swollen. This is a process that takes about 2 to 3 weeks and is mainly caused when our pores are blocked by oil and dead skin cells causing inflammation.

It is important to clean our skin with gentle cleansers which will reduce excess oil, remove dead skin cells, and kill bacteria, doing all of these without damaging our precious skin.

I'm sure that you've seen this on television and you might have been curious about Proactiv. You might have believed in the product or you might have had doubts or speculations. I will share to you what Proactiv is and how it can help you in your battle with acne.

Proactiv Solution is composed of the Proactiv Renewing Cleanser, Proactiv Revitalizing Toner, and Proactiv Repairing Treatment. Here's how it prevents acne and destroys the acne cycle:

Proactiv Renewing Cleanser is Step 1 of the regimen. It is a gentle facial wash with tiny beads that cleans your skin and removes dead skin cells. Step 2 of the regimen is the Proactiv Revitalizing Toner, it supplements the Renewing Cleanser in removing dead skin cells and ensuring that your pores are not clogged by excess oil, thereby eliminating food for bacteria. Without food, the bacteria will die. The final step of the regimen is the Proactiv Repairing Treatment which effectively kills bacteria and prevents is proliferation.

If you have more time in your hands, you can also go beyond the 3-step routine and use the Proactiv Refining Mask which helps reduce the inflammation and swelling of your acne. This comes FREE with every purchase of 30-day or 60-day Proactiv 3-Step System kits.

On my next post, I will be sharing my sister's positive experience with Proactiv. I will be updating you with bi-monthly accounts on how her acne has reduced and her skin improved by using the Proactiv Renewing Cleanser. I will also share her step-by-step regimen on her use of the Proactiv Combination Therapy Kit.

  1. I've had my battle with acne as well. It lasted for a year. To be honest, I can't remember what made it go away because I tried so many creams and ointments. But what I learned during that period is the 3-step method which up to now I still practice.

Looking forward to your sister's progress with Proactive :)

  2. I am thankful to have a skin that is not acne-prone. Although I sometimes get breakouts during my period, too. My niece-in-law has a problem with acne. I will recommend this page to her as it is a useful article.

  5. I think looking for acne cure is one of the hardest challenges we can ever have, it's a case to case basis and sometimes it's not easy to find a product to really suit your skin.

  21. Well I think it would be best to consult a dermatologist to know if the causes of acnes are either food, or just due to body hormones.

The best acne cream isn't too hard to find, but you need to know what you're looking for. It all depends on your skin type, and which ingredients are in which products. I found this site hugely helpful when I was shopping for my acne cream, it's full of some really great tips and info:
